Google CEO calls for AI regulation

In an interview with the CBS program ‘60 Minutes’, Sundar Pinchai, the CEO of Google, says that AI (artificial intelligence) could become the most radical technology in history and could have greater consequences for society than fire or electricity. He says: “We are developing technology that will one day can do more than anything we have ever seen before”. But he also said not to close his eyes to the dangers of artificial intelligence. "We don't have all the answers yet and technology is evolving rapidly," Pichai said. "Will that keep me from sleeping? Absolutely."

New AI regulations

He therefore calls for new regulations to guarantee that AI respects human norms and values and that prevents the abuse of artificial intelligence. The government must play a role in this: because the social influence is so great, it is not up to companies to determine how to deal with AI, he says. He even calls the new development a threat to 'national security', but he did not support the open letter in which about a thousand entrepreneurs and researchers asked to halt the development of AI for six months.
Google does emphasize that the company handles artificial intelligence responsibly. Some employees are frustrated about the relatively slow pace of development, while others are concerned about AI products being introduced too quickly.
